| Hope was due to give birth today and so I was checking her temperature yesterday, and yesterday morning her temperature had dropped by 1 degree. Later in the afternoon her temperature was still low and she started panting and sleeping on and off as though she was entering labour. I watched her all night in the morning her symptoms of labour started to subside and now her temperature is back to normal. Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might have happened? If she doesn't give birth by tomorrow I will take her to the doctor. HOPE |

| How is Hope today Seems like she had a false labour I have experienced this with one of my yorkie girls before She had all the signs of being in labour - temp dropped, no appetite, stages of restlessness & nesting, heavy panting.............. I sat with her the entire night - not daring to close my eye's for a second - but by morning everything had stopped!!! She was eating normally & running around & temp was normal again She went back to "normal" for about 4 days before the labour started up again & she had her pups |

| Thanks! good to hear, its a lil scary.
As you say she is running around and eating and quite happy. I am more relaxed about it today, felt one of the puppies still kicking. After the false labour there wasn't much movement inside and was also worrying.
I think I must just wait another day, everything looks fine.
Thanks Melanie |

| All had appeared well, but yesterday hope had to have a hysterectomy. (Infection in the uterus.) She is still recovering. I am sorry for those who may have been anticipating a puppy from Hope, but I have decided to keep all of the puppies back for now. I will still post pics. Very sorry. |

| No, I have to feed the pups. She has a lot of poison in her still from the infection. I noticed something wasn't right because she had a high temperature, though yesterday she was still feeding them her milk had dried up after that. She is still running a fever. The vet said that she would definitely have been dead by this morning had she not had a Hysterectomy, and that there was no way to tell any sooner that there was a problem. Its a huge loss, she is my favourite in many ways, and had the most beautiful puppies, and she is still so young. |

| Thank you, everyone. The pups are all doing well so far, just finished their last feed. I am using the tube into the stomach.
The vet said that he can't work it out, the uterus was rotten inside, he says that he has only seen this kind of thing with larger dogs in the past. There must have been a problem before, I think its amazing that she still managed to have the pups before showing she was ill.
She was trying to feed he pups even when her fever was high on the third day, but by then her milk had almost dried up. That evening I was very grateful to the vet for working late and performing the hysterectomy, but after that I had to keep feeding her fluids every hour and she would just vomit it up. She lasted two days.
If I had known that it was so bad I would have had her put to sleep.
Sometimes the mother can take some time to recover after the birth, but the lesson I learn from this is to be more concerned about monitoring the temperature of the mother after the birth. She may just look relaxed and mean time she is burning up with fever. |
