PostSubject: My baby is hurt :(   Wed Jul 27, 2011 2:35 pm

This morning Taylor had a really sad face and was constantly sitting at my feet. After she nastily snapped at Trigger who was trying to play with her I noticed she was limping and holding her left front paw up. She snapped at him to leave her alone because she is clearly in pain. When i sat down to look at it i gently squeezed her leg from the knee down to try see where it hurt and when i got closer to her foot she started licking my hand furiously as if to tell me not to squeeze her foot. well, i hardly touched her foot and she screamed blue murder. at 5am the neighbours must have thought i was killing her Sad

So we got a bright light and examined her paw and there is no sign of any cut or sore. I have no idea what is hurting her Sad but she won't put it on the floor and keeps insisting that my fiance carries her everywhere (daddy's girl!)

I'm wondering if she has stood on a stone or a nail or something. because there was no commotion during the night so i dont have a clue what she has done and she was fine when i went to bed last night.

I just hope when i get home she is in less pain. Is there anything I could give her for pain? I dont think a vet trip is necessary because it's not the bone and there is no open wound. It's as if its bruised badly Sad

Sorry to hear that she is hurt Sad You can give her Panado's or Inza's for the pain. I always keep these at home because they are safe to give to a dog and both pills are really cheap. The Inza are ibuprofen which helps with any inflammation too. Inflammation is often the cause of the pain and when the swelling goes down, the pain goes away. So, try getting some Inza's from your doctor or a pharmacy (no more than R10 for 30).

If you can't find Inza's, you can give her some Panado's. Panado's are paracetamol which is safe for dogs. The dangers of an overdose are very slim, but you should still carefully monitor her and adjust the meds.

Remember not to give her too much pain medication though. They quickly forget that they are actually hurt and they can hurt themselves even more if they aren't careful. Keep her quiet and calm Smile

**Aspirin isn't safe for dogs!! Never give your dog any aspirin!!**

Well she has recovered and is running around on it so i dont know what was hurting her Sad how much panado do you give them in a case like that and how often? for future reference i would like to know!

although i reckon getting panado down her throat will be a mission, she is too clever to be fooled into swallowing pills! And if they're crushed in her food she refuses to eat!

I used to give Charlie, the foster pup with the amputated toes, crushed panado's in goat's milk. Goat's milk is the closest thing to a bitch's breastmilk and it doesn't upset their tummies. You can find it in your local grocery store or at Woolworths.

You'd have to find out from your vet what the best dosage is. Overdoses can occur and you don't want to risk it. The best option would be to get some pain meds for dogs from your vet to be sure that you aren't taking any chances with human medication.

I mentioned in a previous post that ibuprofen is safe for dogs. It seems that a lot of vets are concerned with ibuprofen toxicity in small dogs, so it's best to stay away from ibuprofen products.

I think the safest option is to get pain meds from the vet and confirm a correct dosage for your dogs. Then you can administer the meds in an emergency without having to run to the vet.
