I brush mine every few days because June is in a puppy coat and doesn't require lots of grooming. Cash has a very silky coat that doesn't require lots of maintenance, but I keep it relatively short. Orio gets brushed most because we are growing out his coat and topknot.

I know we're supposed to brush them every day, but I often don't have the time. How often do you brush your Yorkie?

I brush my Yorkie kids twice a week on average. It does depend on their coat types & their age - some need brushing more regularly then others. I find they need more regular brushing during the first year, but the adult coats are a lot easier to maintain Very Happy

I brush Ciara more in winter when she wears her jersey because her hair knots. Mika also has a puppy cut and I brush him about once a week.

But I also really have to make time to do it!!!!

Wellington is notoriously hot, so we keep their hair short. It is also much kinder to them as we live on a farm and there is always a thorn or burr getting stuck and making them itch.

I try brush Bali every day, but she doesn't seem to like it much. I have even bought a softer brush but she keep trying to bite or nibble at anything she can. Any advice?

Hi Bine. Just keep at it. And reward her when you are done. They get used to it after a while. Some grow to love grooming and others just tolerate it, but it has to be done.

I give my Yorkies a big yummy treat, like cheese or dried chicken, after a grooming session and after their weekly bath. This gives them something to work for and something to look forward to.

My 5 year old now comes and lies on my lap after I've brushed and treated the other two. He demands to be groomed - not because he likes it, but because he wants the treat Smile

Hi Marilize- thanks for the advice. I will definitely will try with treats. On that note, is cheese a fine treat to give yorkies. I was told to be cautious with dairy for yorkies.

Regarding bathing, from what age can i start bathing on a weekly basis. I was told by the vet to bath her minimum every 4 weeks, but that seems like such a long time.

No problem, Bine.

Cheese shouldn't be given all the time because of the fat content. Apart from the obvious weight issues, too much fat can cause pancreatitis in Yorkies. You can give cheese as treats, but in small amounts. One little block of cheese a day is perfectly fine. Because my Yorkies are crazy about cheese, I keep it reserved for special treats (like grooming).

Vets tend to recommend monthly bathing, but if your Yorkie sleeps in your bed and lies on your sofas, you have to rethink that. The general rule of thumb is daily brushing and weekly baths. The earlier you start, the better. As soon as you get your puppy, you can start bathing weekly.

Grooming is a whole other cup of tea, but you might want to buy some baby shampoo for the puppy's face. You don't want shampoo to sting her eyes. You can also use a wash cloth if she doesn't want water on her face. I don't use a wash cloth personally because I get my dogs to tilt their chins upwards. This lets the water flow over their heads and not into their nostrils.

Try to make grooming as much fun for the puppy as possible. You want her to enjoy it and you want to enjoy it yourself. See it as a bonding session - it's pampering time Smile
