PostSubject: Shots and non-shedding baby teeth   Mon Jun 15, 2009 11:05 am

I have been putting off the last of Puddin's shots...the Lepto and the Rabies...for as long as possible. But Lepto is water-borne and now there are a lot of puddles on the ground that Puddin' obliviously walks right through, so I figured it was time.

It's been 2 hours and she's seeming a bit subdued. I have her a bowl of chicken and rice a few minutes ago and she lapped up all the liquid but didn't eat much of the rice or chicken.

On Thursday she goes in to have her extra baby teeth removed...she has a BUNCH of them that aren't coming out even though the permanent teeth are in. The vet tech says they will have to sedate her, but probably not anaesthesia...I hope not!

So, for now Puddin's mama is worried about her little baba Crying or Very sad

If they just sedate her, will she feel any pain? I would be worried about that.

It is great that you put off the heavy vaccines until later, my vet gave June her rabies shot at 12 weeks and she was vomiting the whole evening after that. She also still has a bump on her back from the shot. I would never again give rabies to a baby so young. (I think a lot of vets just don't care enough Sad )

Good luck with Puddin's procedures and try to stay as relaxed as you can, you don't want her to pick up on your anxiety Smile

PostSubject: Rabies Shots   Tue Jun 16, 2009 6:25 pm

Good luck Sweetviolet. You will be in our thoughts!

Chloé must go back on Friday for her final (I think) rabies
shot, and I dread it because the last time (a month ago) she
vomited allot after the rabies injection. She is 4 months old now, so
hopefully it is the last rabies until she is 1 year old.

I see that you feed Puddin' chicken and rice, do you mind
sharing your recipe with me? Chloé is a very, very picky
eater and I battle to find something she wants to eat.....

I tried the beef, rice and veggies but she is not keen on it!

Thanx will appreciate Smile

It's pretty simple. I mince a couple of chicken breasts and put them in a pot with 2 cups of water and boil (covered) for 20 minutes or so...enough to get the liquid to taste chickenish.

I also make some basmati rice (my husband is diabetic so it is the only kind of rice I keep in the house): 1 cup rice, 2 cups water, cook covered until the water is absorbed. Then I put the rice and chicken and broth together in a refrigerator container overnight. The rice will absorb some of the broth and become very fat and soft. It makes a lot, but you can freeze small quantities to thaw in the microwave later.

To serve, I spoon out some chicken and rice and some of the broth, then warm in the microwave just until the chill is off.

Usually Puddin will lap up the liquid and then go for the rice and chicken. She has never refused to eat it eventually, though.

If she is constipated, I will feed her plain yoghurt, also warmed in the microwave until the chill is off. Opens her right up!

The recipe sounds great, but I am just wondering if she gets a supplement as well? They need the vitamins and minerals from veggies. Just wondering Smile

I only give her this as a treat or when she is feeling poorly. She eats kibble the rest of the time (or anything she can con me into giving her...she LOVES fruit).

If you want to use this as a regular meal, you will have to give her supplements.

But Puddin' will eat anything...she is absolutely not picky...so when she gets picky I know she's not feeling well and make her up some of this to get her through it.

Poor Puddin'!

She's home now, moaning and laying in my lap like she's fixing to die. She won't put her head down because her jaws hurt. They took out 5 baby teeth, poor little thing! She won't even eat her rice and chicken.

I'm very worried about her. She's chilled (her ears and pads are cold) and I have her on my heated mattress pad, cuddled up with me and covered with her favourite blankie.

Does anyone know how long it takes for them to recover from a general anaesthetic? I'm worried now and if she isn't perked up by morning, I'm going be be in a panic!

She ought to be fully recovered in about 24 hours. She will be a bit groggy and out-of-it for a while after the anaesthesia.

Don't worry, though. She will be fine tomorrow, she just needs some sleep, lots of love and care. Not eating is fairly normal, but if she isn't eating by tomorrow, you need to take her back to the vet to check her out.

Good luck, little Puddin' and her mama. We are thinking of you.

She's better this morning, but she moaned throughout the night, and drooled. Poor thing wants to chew on her rawhide toys this morning, but I think her gums are still too tender.

She has eaten a bowl of rice and chicken and peed several times, but no poops yet. She is still subdued, not her normal frisky self, so I suppose she has some more sleeping to do to get over it all.

Every time I look at her depressed little face, I am struck with guilt. I know this was all in her best interests, but I still feel guilty at having been the one to put her through all this.

It's a lot like having a baby again!

Aaah Shame, poor little Puddin'
Hope she feels better tomorrow.

Chloé also went to the vet today,
getting her last puppy inoculations.
I told the vet that she gets sick after
each injection, she gave her another
injection for the nausea, so she got
3 injections today. She is still fine
but will see tomorrow, normally after
her injections she gets sick the day after.

I also asked the vet to give me the
de-worming tablet, which I will give to her
in a couple of days time so that everything
is not so heavy on her.... Poor little thing,
felt so sorry for her but she was very brave
facing the 3 injections!

She weighs a full 2.5Kg! The vet says she is
ok and healthy! She is just 4 months old now,
wonder what she will weigh when fully grown.... Smile

Puddin' is 2.8kg and will be 6 months in a week. The vet says she's pretty much done growing, that I shouldn't expect her to get much bigger.

They did a general on her...they had to take out FIVE teeth! She didn't handle it too well (my blog has all the details plus some pictures of her). She had her procedure at 8am yesterday and we didn't bring her home until 5 and it was not until about 5 today that she seemed mostly recovered. She moaned all night last night and was still lethargic and a bit uncoordinated when she got up, but she's eating the chicken and rice and peeing OK...but she hasn't pooped since Wednesday and that has me a bit concerned. I've given her a bowl of yoghurt but it hasn't done any good. She may end up back at the vet's tomorrow for a stool softener or something!

So, she is on the mend but taking advantage of her recuperative state to get be a bit of a diva...but aren't they all?
