PostSubject: Introducing yorkie puppy to my Ozzy    Sat Jan 15, 2011 11:34 am

Hi everyone!

Hope you all enjoyed the festive season!

I am so concerned about my Ozzy ( 1 year 2 months) : ( I just got Lilly ( almost 9 weeks old). Also a yorkie : ) My poor Ozzy doesn't seem to like her at all. He is so depressed. Not himself at all. Not eating, wants nothing to do with her. Sleeps most of the time and does his best not be close to her. I have read a little about how to acknowledge him first ( to let him know he is the pack leader, etc.) perhaps I didn't do this correctly on Lilly's first day with us. Any suggestions / tips to help ease this transition from being 'only child' to now having to share the attention. My heart breaks for my Ozzy.

I have a 10 week old puppy and a 2 yr old Yorkie...I know what you are going through!

Ozzie needs alone time with you. We put the baby in her x-pen and spend time with Puddin'. We play with her, cuddle with her, and just let her have the house to herself for a while. Right now Hubby has gone out to get brekkie and took Puddin with him...she loves to ride in the car and right now she's getting some alone time with Papa. The baba is home with me.

Give him portions of the day where his life is what he considers normal. Give him "safe" places where he can get away from the baby. Puddin still isn't fully committed to her new sister, but she is coming around, and we make sure that she has plenty of "alone" time, letting her gradually accept the baby into her territory.

Hi Sweet Violet,

Thank you so much for that! Glad I'm not alone. So the point is to give him time and space where he is away from Lilly - I'm going to try this. Don't have an x-pen, but will brainstorm on how I can make this work. Mom-in-law has baby gate that she used to prevent baby from going up the stairs, will see if I can get that to keep Lilly in one room, while I give Ozzy 'alone' time.

Thank you again.

Good advice there by SweetViolet. He needs time and he will come around don't worry about it they really enjoy having friends. Just remember you are the pack leader not any of them, they have pecking orders but you have to be in control. I would love to see your babies.

Just give Ozzy some time. It took Ciara (3rs old) quite some time to get used to our new yorkie Mika!!! We also gave her alone time and still did the things we used to with her. Ciara took extremely long to accept Mika and still now after 5months she chooses when she wants to play with him!!!

Just be patient and let them explore each other and dont take sides or make Ozzy feel like he is being ignored!!!

Taylor was very excited when she first saw the new puppy and soon realised (5 minutes later!) that he wasn't leaving and that was her in a mood! Ther were times when i thought i had really done the wrong thing getting him but when i look at them now they are such great friends Smile most the time it is her initiating a game with him Smile He is now 10 months old and i never have a moment's trouble Smile they sleep together, eat together and play together all the time.

It took time though and I think Sweetviolet has a great point in giving Ozzy some alone time where he feels like the one and only like he always has been:)

It's good to remember though that they will find their own "pecking order" and you can determine who will be more dominant in their relationship.
