PostSubject: Teeth cleaning   Mon 10 Jan 2011 - 12:27

Trigger hasnt been neutered as yet but it's in the pipeline. I know it's best to have them neutered and have their remaining baby teeth pulled at the same time, but what about the full cleaning of teeth procedure?

I ask only because I was brushing their teeth yesterday and noticed the back teeth are developing quite a build-up of plaque. I like to give my dogs hooves and bones and things to chew and try keep their teeth clean but these little dogs seem prone to plaque build up. I have been a little slack the last few weeks in brushing so im doing that daily now to try and see if it helps becuase the plaque doesnt seem hardened too badly and im hoping with daily brushing we can get it off. Taylor had it once on a small tooth just behind her canines and it was so vrot it was falling out! i brushed gently daily and it is now fine.

Trigger of course HATES having his teeth brushed. he cried like im lsitting his throat before I have even touched his mouth! really should have been born a little girl! He hasnt lost his baby canines on the top yet though and at almost 10 months im worried he wont lose them on his own. no matter how many rough games of tug we play! ha ha! and i see that because they are touching his adult canines there is food trapped there and it will soon affect his adult teeth. Yesterday I was forced to floss the trapped bits out MUCH to his horror! sounds crazy I know but I had no choice!

We used to send our Maltese in every so often to have hers cleaned but i dont like the idea of having my dogs put under too often in life. does anyone else's suffer with bad build up?

Our Vet told us that they only remove the baby teeth when they are under and they dont do the cleaning as bacteria might get into their bloodstreams and this is dangerous for the dogs. With Mika they took out the remaining baby teeth, but no cleaning was done. Luckily his teeth is still clean and we are keeping it that way. Ciara is another story as she retained some of her baby teeth and we want to have that removed when we neuter her!!!

Im not sure if all Vets work like this??? What does other Vets say???

I've had my older Yorkies' retained teeth removed and the raw diet and meaty bones keeps Cash and June's teeth sparkly clean. Orio still has some baby teeth that will have to be removed soon, but I'm giving them loads of raw bones to help the teeth loosen on their own.

I don't brush my dogs' teeth, but I use Wampum's anti-bacterial mouth spray. It helps for bad breath. I also have a tooth brush and toothpaste, but I've yet to use those. I find that brushing isn't really necessary as long as they eat lots of raw bones and chew toys to clean their teeth (after the baby teeth have been removed, of course).
