PostSubject: Gracie's Pregnancy Calendar   Mon Dec 20, 2010 9:01 pm

My girl Gracie is due to have pups around the 30th of January cheers For anyone who would like to follow the pups progress before they're even born, here is Gracie's pregnancy calendar Very Happy

Sire: Tanner
Dam: Gracie
Breeder: Sharlamay Yorkies

Sat 27 Nov 2010
First day of mating.

48 hours after the first mating the bitch should be mated again. Subsequent matings occurring over a period of time enhance the chances of fertilaziton taking place.

The spermatozoa migrate up through the cervix.

Sun 28 Nov 2010 -
Sperm travel searching for a mature ripened eggs.

Sun 28 Nov 2010 - Mon 29 Nov 2010
Spermatozoa reach the eggs in the oviducts.

Mon 29 Nov 2010 - Tue 30 Nov 2010
Fertilisation occurs in the oviducts which lead from the ovaries to the uterus.

Tue 30 Nov 2010 -Thu 2 Dec 2010
Fertilised eggs migrate down the oviducts and into the uterine horns.
The migration continue to enable even spacing of the embryos.
During this migration the eggs will grow into a blastocystes.

Wed 8 Dec 2010 - Fri 10 Dec 2010
The blastocystes implant in the wall of the uterus.

Wed 8 Dec 2010 - Wed 22 Dec 2010
The blastocystes will grow into an embryos.
During the next two weeks the important organs will develop.

Sat 11 Dec 2010 - Sat 18 Dec 2010
Dams nipples begin to pink enlarge.
The fur on the dams belly and around the nipples may become thinner.

Fri 17 Dec 2010 - Fri 24 Dec 2010
Morning sickness might occur due to hormonal changes or stretching and distension of the uterus. Dam may appear a bit apathetic. She may be off her feed for a while and vomit from time to time.
Feeding the dam several meals spaced throughout the day might help.
Your veterinarian may want to prescribe a drug to relax the uterus.

Wed 22 Dec 2010 - Sun 26 Dec 2010
An experienced person (a breeder or a veterinarian) can tell by careful palpation whether the dam is pregnant.
It's now the best time to do this because the embryos are walnut-sized now and easy to count.

Sat 25 Dec 2010
Start to increase the dams food ration.
Don't overfeed, excessive weight gain should be avoided.
The foetuses are now and are fully developed miniature dogs.

Fri 31 Dec 2010
The Dams abdomen starts to get larger.

Mon 10 Jan 2011
It's very easy now to feel the puppies, counting them might be a bit more difficult.

Thu 13 Jan 2011 - Fri 21 Jan 2011
Dam begins to spend a lot more time in self-grooming.
Her breasts become even more swollen.
She may become a bit restlessness and begin to search for a suitable place to have her puppies.

Sat 15 Jan 2011
The dam might lose her appetite during this period. Her abdomen can be crowded with puppies.
It is better to feed several smaller meals spaced throughout the day.
You can easily detect abdominal movement now.

Sat 15 Jan 2011 - Sun 30 Jan 2011
Nipples and vulva should be gently cleaned with warm water, you might want to trim the hairs surrounding the nipples, to allow easier access for the puppies to suck.

Tue 25 Jan 2011 - Fri 28 Jan 2011
Milky fluid may be expressed from the nipples.

Wed 26 Jan 2011
You might want to start taking the dams rectal temperature each morning and evening.

Sat 29 Jan 2011
Twelve to 24 hours before she is due to deliver, the dams rectal temperature may drop from 101 to 98 degrees.
Clear discharge from the vulva might occur.

Sun 30 Jan 2011
Expected date of whelp. Of course this is just an average. Whelping may take place from the 59th to the 65th day. Puppies born before the 58th day will probably be too young to survive.

Thanks Kristin Very Happy I am sooooooo excited about Gracie's expected litter of pups cheers I took her for a scan (I take all my females for a scan 3 to 4 weeks after they have been covered - just to confirm pregnancy & check that the pups are developing well), anyway - during the scan my vet could only see 2 little heart beats, but Gracie is already huge & still has a few weeks to go - so I have a feeling there might be a third pup in there that was just hiding at the time of the scan Question I will have her x-rayed a few days before her due date. The x-ray will give an accurate count on the pups, & will show if any of the pups might be too big for Gracie to free whelp. This will be Gracie's 3rd litter, & her previous pups have all been quite small, most under 100 grams, & Gracie whelped them very quickly with no problems at all - so here's keeping fingers crossed that it will all go just as smoothly this time Very Happy

The average doggy pregnancy lasts 63 days, but you can't calculate a due date with 100% certainty, it is always give or take a few days on either side of the calculated date. I like to have my girls covered 4 or 5 times, with 48 hour intervals inbetween each mating. Usually the first mating takes place on day 10 or 11 after the female has started bleeding, so it's important to know the exact date the female starts her heat. The males will not show much interest in the female until she is actually ready to be covered, except in the case of younger or inexperienced males - they sometimes try their luck far too soon! When the female is ready she will start flagging (she will move her tail to the side & allow the male to come to her) At this stage even if you just run your hand down the females back she will move her tail to the side. Each females cycle is different, so I just monitor her body language & monitor the males body language. That always tells me when they are ready Smile

I suppose the vet would give you a pretty accurate birth date after the scan Smile That's very interesting! Is the scan similar to a human scan? and how does an xray work? i thought xrays were dangerous to pregnant women and i thought it would apply to animals as well!

I hope it all goes well but im sure it will and soon Gracie will be a mommy all over again. How exciting! cant wait!

The scan is similar to the scans humans have - but they are not nearly as advanced as the human scans are these days - with the human scan you can even see the babies face in 3D! It's amazing! Sadly the doggy scan equipment is like the human scans were about 18 years ago - you can just see blobs & shapes, & the heart beat is just like a tiny flashing speck. Well I don't know if other vets have more advanced equipment - but that's what my vets scanning equipment is like. Lol! They also put that jelly stuff all over the dogs belly! Wow - it would be so cool if the equipment was as advanced as the human scanning equipment - then we could see those cute little faces, & get to know how many males & females to expect Very Happy

The x-ray is not dangerous for the doggies. I hold my girls on their back while the x-ray is taken - so I have to wear this big heavy jacket, but it's a very quick & painless procedure Very Happy

The females should never ever be bred before the age of 1 year old. It is preferable to wait until their second heat, & I do not like to breed with girls under 18 months of age. Very Happy

We do also not allow breeding prior to the girls second heat and and absolutely not before the age of 14 months and then only if everything else checks out. They get tested together with the boys and if everything is OK we go ahead with the mating. I personly also like Sharlamy do not like to cover a girl before eighteen months of age. I normally do an evaluation of the girls at 14 months and then make a decision on wether they are of breeding quality or not.

I would like if I may add something here. A breeding girl or boy can never be "Almost OK" they check out perfect at the vet's or they do not get bred. JHMO!!!!

very interestgin about the xray! i always wondered if it was safe for the unborn pups! imagine if they had the technology humans have! would be great!

Taylor is 16 months old and I often look at her and see this little baby still! 14 months is very young in my opinion they are still so immature surely?! i mean a human CAN have a baby at 13 these days but is it safe and wise? NO! so for me a young dog is like that teenage girl who isnt ready! JMHO! Wink

Yes the X-Ray is safe for the pups after day 45 of their pregnancy but I do mine closer to day 55-57 when the bones of the puppies are more developed and can be picked up by the X-Ray better.

You are right Sharlamay it feels like 9years to me when my girls are pregnant.

Gracie is doing great thanks Megs & Val Very Happy Nobody would believe she's just 9 days or so away from having pups - she's still running after her ball like a crazy girl :bounce: If she had her way I'd be sitting in the garden all day long throwing her ball for her :bball: But it keeps her nice & fit - hopefully she'll push those pups out with no problems. Her tummy is gorgeous & big - I just love lying her on her back on my lap & keeping my hand on her tummy to feel those little pups kicking I love you
