Our house was designed and built by a German mechanical engineer. My husband is also a mechanical engineer, so he appreciates a lot of the little touches the guy came up with, things that I don't even notice until Hubby points them out. One of the things this guy did was site the pool so that it collects heat from the sun without a solar system. It is not a heated pool, but it is definitely not so cold as to raise goosebumps. So, Hubby is in the pool this morning and decides it is time for Puddin' to learn about the pool. She's never been in a pool before and she doesn't know about them. We want her to know where the pool steps are so if she tumbles in at the deep end (a full 2 m deep), she knows where to go so she can get out. She was NOT amused ! Hubby kept her in and made her swim to the steps from various places in the pool and, rather than being terrified, like the Maltese, she was indignant! She would swim to the pool steps, stand on the top step and place her front paws on the edge, then look at me to pick up, which I wouldn't do. Soon, Papa would swoop in, pluck her off the steps and take her back out into deep water and make her swim to the steps again (where I was standing). After the fourth or fifth time, she saw him coming and gave a big heave and scampered out of the pool and into the towel I was holding for her! It's been an hour now and she's fully dry, but...she's still not speaking to her Papa!! Next time, we're going to take Hubby's remote control boat (he's 38 going on 7) and see if that distracts her any. This morning she was running along side the pool while he played with it. Either way, WE know she needs to learn how to get out of the pool but SHE has other ideas!!

Zoey would HATE a pool! Maybe you should look into a scamper ramp for her?

The steps aren't very tall, she just wanted ME to pick her up! But she needs to know how to get out of the pool in case she falls in...she loves to chase the birds and I expect one day she will have her eye on a bird rather than where she is going and end up in it quite unintentionally. If she knows she can get out, then I don't expect she will be so likely to panic.
She's quite funny...we just got back from a wedding...been gone 7 hours...she STILL isn't speaking to him!! |

Oh shame! But they have to learn unfortunately. Mine LOVE water, but when they can feel the floor! at the farm they jump into the river and the dam no problems...a pool they avoid! Both have fallen in as babies and were rescued. We dont have a pool but my parents do and they go there often if they need looking after if im away. When Trigger fell in the first time he started swimming full throttle towards the deep end We were having a family lunch at my fiance's parents house and I jumped in clothes and all and pulled him out only to be told by my not so sweet mother in law to be that he "needs to learn and I should leave him"...um, he was like 10 weeks old! needless to say he wont go anywhere near it now!

I think its a great idea to teach them how to swim. When Ciara was little we took her camping with us. When it was low tide hubby walked into the water looking at the rocks. The water was about ankle height. I put Ciara down and she ran straight after him. She started floating and immediately swam out and ran for the shaw. Shame, I think she got such a big fright !!! I would like to see Mika's reaction. That one is a real drama queen and also has his moods when he is upset for us!!! After the get together on Sat we were thoroughly ignored!!!!!! At one point I thought something was wrong with him and took him to hubby who inspected him for ticks or bite marks and he squealed as if he was being murdered. When I put him on the floor he ran for the basket and dug his head under his paws. We left him and by 9pm Mr was terrorising Ciara again!!!

I went swimming one time and took my Yuppy for a swim. It was his first time and I admit throwing him into the water was not a bright idea. He cried and I was so guilty and wish that everything was just a dream but unfortunately it's reality. Sorry Yuppy!

well, to make it up to him perhaps you should try again but just not throw him in! SHAME! mine had their firste xperience falling in so they had the same shock! they avoid a pool but love water if they can feel their feet You should try take Yuppy somewhere where he can get wet but feel the ground, like the beach or a stream. Taylor LOVES to swim! these days she will get into the river and start paddling!
