Advantage works fine for me, but I only use it if I find the dogs scratching. Puddin' sleeps in my pillows, so you can be sure she is kept 100% flea-free! It has been almost a year since I have had to treat her for fleas, same with the Maltese.

I have used Program with great success. It is a small tablet that you give once a month, it goes into the bloodstream and when the flea bites the dog, it dies.

We are on a farm and in a breeding kennel, fleas can quickly get out of control. My dogs have the run of the house and outside, so no fleas for me thank you!

I did not use Program during the winter months, but I am whatching the dogs like a hawk for any fleas that might have hatched since it became warmer.

I am aware of all the "natural" products to use for fleas, but as a bulb of garlic in front of my window will not keep burglars out, I opted for Trellidoor.

I prefer to use natural remedies because of the dangers of chemicals, but sometimes the fleas can't be controlled with natural things. Or at least not natural things I like to use. For example, diatomaceous earth is organic and it's great against fleas, but it's smelly and (because it's a powder) it makes the dogs dirty.

I spray a mixture of eucalyptus oil and water throughout the house and it makes everything smell fresh and clean. The fleas hate the smell and then flee (pun intended, lol). This has always worked very well for us because I mix the eucalyptus oil with their shampoo and conditioner too. You just need to be careful of their eyes! It's a very strong, minty oil which can really sting.

At the beginning of the year, my dogs got fleas from my parents' dogs and the eucalyptus oil just wasn't cutting it. So, I asked the vet and he recommended Revolution. I tried it and was very impressed. I use this if we have a heavy infestation, but luckily, I've only used it once. I firmly believe in treating the household with anti-flea products too. Otherwise, the eggs hatch and the cycle continues.

Thanks for the replies, I use frontline on the dogs, always have and its always worked but my aunt sent me a sms over the weekend asking me what I used because frontline wasn't working for her anymore. I told her I would ask the forum - it's so nice having a place to ask questions and get everyones opinions Very Happy

Frontline keeps fleas at bay in our house. Luckily we never had a problem, but because they are outside and there is grass and sand...we dont want to take chances!!!! ANd we take them for walks, so they can pick fleas up along the way.

I also used frontline top spot monthly but here at the coast my dogs still got fleas. Especially Brutus!!! He used to be a wanderer....but now with Terrance and Tinkerbell our yard is puppy proof and Brutus can't get out any more!!! Yay!!!! cheers he brought the fleas home and all my dogs had a very bad infestation of fleas. The frontline top spot did not seem to work anymore. What I did was I vacuumed our house, then I sprayed all our loose carpets(we have tiles), wooden door frames, build in cupbourds(just the bottom where the cupboard meets the floor) and their bedding, which was clean with fleago. I washed the dogs, and sprayed them with ultrum tick and flea spray(my vetshop didnot had frontline spray instock, so I had to go for second best). I also put frontline plus top spot on them 2 weeks later, I shaved their hair and sprayed them again with the ultrum flea spray and now they are flea free for 2 weeks!!!!!!! cheers cheers I am going to watch them like hawks and Fingers crossed we won't have fleas again.
You have to flea treat your dogs environment wit something like fleago which has a growth regulator in it. And use something on the dogs which kills the fleas instantly like capstar, frontline spray or ultrum spray. Remember to deworm your dogs when they have fleas.(fleas are intermidiate hosts for 'Lintwurm')

tree tea oil is very useful for fleas too

Apply tea tree oil to the skin behind the yorkie's head or between the shoulder blades. The skin absorbs the oil quickly and repels fleas, keeping your dog and home flea-free. You can also apply tea tree oil to treat acne, fungal infections and other skin problems.
