We recently had a huge thread about Yorkies with or without tails and I thought it would be interesting to see exactly what your preferences are... please vote Smile

Tail docking is NOT illegal Sad Please read more here [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

In my personal opinion I think tail docking in certain breeds should be allowed - like the rottweiler - I should imagine an excited Rottweiler tail would be strong enough to knock a child off their feet No But what harm could a Yorkie tail possibly do confused I love my yorkies tails I love you

Yes, it's not illegal. And I agree, in some breeds it is necessary. Like with gundogs, the work they do can cause great damage to their tails, so they are docked for health reasons. While I agree and understand this, I'm still against docking for superficial reasons. I simply don't like the practice and after what I went through with Cash (his breeder docked his tail and 'struggled'!), I don't want a dog whose tail has to be chopped off.

And the Yorkie tails are gorgeous Smile So, while I completely understand that docking is necessary sometimes, I like my Yorkies bushy-tailed (and bright-eyed Razz )

Very interesting article!!! Thanks Mel.

I think the smaller breed dogs look nice with their long tails, but there are some larger dogs, like our boxer that would be a danger with a tail. Storms tail was docked by the vet (thats what the breeder told us in 2003). He wags that stubby tails so vigorously that I am sure if it was longer he would hurt himself or us with it. So I agree that its ok in certain breeds of larger dogs, but in the little ones, their tails are not in the way at all.

I understand the restrictions as well. Im sure many puppies have died at the hands of their owners or people that just cut their tails off, but if its done by a trained Vet or surgeon, it should be ok or should I say, they are supposed to do it in the right way!!

But if it were just for the looks, I would not suggest the tail docking at all!!!
