PostSubject: Amount of Yorkies on Gumtree   Mon Oct 18, 2010 10:07 am

I was looking at Gumtree over the weekend & was shocked to see the amount of Yorkies being advertised.
I know they popular and all but wow there are so many people that are just in it for the money!!
I was really sad to see the one advert:
You just HAVE to see this - 6 weeks old - 255 grams - see pictures of me, mom(2.5kg) and dad(1.4kg).

Yorkie puppies, very small little males, available 22 October.
Parents KUSA registered, your puppy will be registered as well. First injection and de-worming done. Owner’s ‘how-to’ manual supllied.

I really hope they are really strict about who they sell these pups to and they letting them go at 8 weeks - this really broke my heart.

Megs, I completely agree. Sadly, the popularity of the breed has done more bad than good. So many people are just breeding for the extra buck, not to improve the breed. These puppies are probably being sold on full registration, meaning that the new owners can breed with that dog and register the litter (if the other dog is also registered). It's a vicious cycle.

This is just one of the reasons why we are starting a yorkie club - we need to stand up and do something about this. I'm sick of seeing bad breedings take place, and then hearing that those pups are registered and sold to the first person who puts down the moola. It's disgusting, especially because they let them go at 8 weeks! In some states in the USA, it's illegal to sell them that young! And the added benefit of staying with the mom and siblings makes a huge difference in a dog's life. Mad

I also saw that post Megs. I dont really go the the pets section on Gumtree anymore because it is so upsetting to see all these adds and I work myself up and cant do anything about it!!!!

But funnily enough I forced myself to have a peek on Thursday and saw that add. I also almost post it on the forum because it was so upsetting!!!

Ladies I agree with you that it is awful to see how many Yorkie pups are being advertised on Gumtree Sad Sad Sad

Marilize you are 100% right to say "the popularity of the breed has done more bad than good" Sad Sad Sad

However, I do have to comment on this particular post from Gumtree that you are all referring to here. This particular breeder has been breeding for many, many years. I know her personally and I bought my female Gabriella from her in March 2008. Gabriella has the same sire (daddy) as the pups that are currently for sale. I have been to her home & I can assure you she is a wonderful breeder & very passionate about all her Yorkie kids. My Gabriella is a beautifully bred girl & weighs 3kg. Please see photo's of her below.

These particular pups that are being advertised are very, very small ..... but they have come from a sire of 1.4kg's & a dam of 2.5kg's - both very acceptable breeding weights. All breeders at some stage will have a real tiny tot - not just bad breeders but good breeders too. If the tiny tot is a result of careless & irresponsible breeding - for example a 900gram male being bred to a 1.2kg female - then indeed we can frown upon such breeders. But we need to protect the good breeders, & we need to keep in mind that there have been tiny yorkies since the beginning of the breed.

"Sylvia, a matchbox-size Yorkshire terrier owned by Arthur Marples of Blackburn, England, was the smallest dog in recorded history. The dog died in 1945 when she was two years old, at which point she stood 2.5 inches tall at the shoulder, measured 3.5 inches from nose tip to tail, and weighed 4 ounces.
For 1995 through 2002 Guinness World Records listed a Yorkshire terrier named Big Boss, as the smallest dog in the world. Big Boss was listed at 11.94 cm (4.7 in) tall when his owner, Dr. Chai Khanchanakom of Thailand, registered the toy dog with Guinness.
A Yorkie named Thumbelina, 5.5 inches tall and 8 inches long, held the Guinness World Record for smallest living dog prior to 1995.

Ok!!!

Glad to know she is a good breeder. Its actually very hard to tell on Gumtree as everyone is trying to make money!!!

Hopefully all the good breeders will now start to advertise on this site or join the Yorkie Club so one can be sure of what type of pups you will be getting and that the breeds best interest is put first!!

Thanks for sharing Mel! flower

Glad to know they a good breeder, I understand that litters can produce really tiny pups and really big pups - Zoey's the smallest of her litter at 1.8 and her brother is 5.
I just think the public sees small and thinks fashion statement & bragging rights not realising that having a puppy that small needs lots of attention and alot of care.

Thanks for easing my heart about these pups, just wish all breeders were responsible
