PostSubject: Home needs a Yorkie...   Thu Oct 14, 2010 9:24 pm

Well, my move to Joburg is done, we have our own house now (moved in 6 weeks ago) and I've had the surgery I needed on my eyes, so everything is "go" from here.

For those of you who don't know me, I am a full-time Dog Mama, with two Maltese and a Yorkie. We'd like another Yorkie and have decided, for now, to see if we can find one who needs rescuing. I've got a big house with (mostly) tile floors, a huge garden (and a separate, walled garden for doggies that need time outs) and even a sunroom off the patio (with baby gates) that can be used as a dog bedroom. Got X-pen, doggie pram, crate, the works!

Puddin' is nearly 2 now, she loves other dogs and is very friendly. The Maltese are less open to newcomers but they are not hostile, just aloof until they get to know the newby.

I am able to handle vet bills for a sick baby, grooming bills for a grungy one, and have the time, energy, space and love for someone who is sad, neglected, or just needs a good, loving home. I cannot, however, travel beyond the general Joburg area to collect a dog...if it is more than a day's drive from here, it is too far for me. Also, I have allergies, so a crossbreed is probably not going to work for me unless it has a Yorkie coat.

So, if anyone in this area knows of a Yorkie (age is no barrier...our last rescue dog was a 14 year old Fox Terrier), please keep me in mind.

The Maltese are both rescues, one from the SPCA, the other was a sickly little fellow we got from a private rescue organization. Both are absolute darlings and we love them dearly. Hubby has decided the max number of dogs we can afford to properly care for is four, so we have an opening, and another Yorkie seems like the right thing to do, to take in one who needs us. So, we are on the look out...

Great to see you back on the forum, Sweetviolet! I'm glad to hear that the move and the operation went well and you can join in the forum again Smile I can't believe Puddin' is almost 2 years old! She is such a sweetheart!

We are always on the look-out for yorkie rescues, so if one comes up in your area, we'll definitely think of you!

This is a post I saw on Gumtree Cape Town today -

Loving little golden Yorkshire , 10 years old. She has been mute and almost deaf since birth. We are looking for an older person that can give her love and pamper her all day. She stays indoors most of the day but loves to explore the garden sometimes. Due to our new work schedule we cannot give her the attention she needs and deserves, and do not want to put her down. Only to a loving home that can really take good care of her.

Sadly, I am nowhere near Cape Town anymore. The old Maltese boy is hard of hearing and I used to have a blind Peke, so dogs with this kind of disability are no problem for me. But I am in Joburg now and can't help.

I have sent an email. I can collect in Durban in November as we are going down there to visit my in laws. But unless he is KUSA registered, I'll have to neuter him cos Puddin' isn't spayed and we don't plan to spay her. He looks like a BIG boy, though, doesn't he?

Wow, it's great that you are willing to offer him a home! He does look pretty big, about the same size as my Cash. But it's just more to love I love you

Well, he hasn't been neutered and if he's not KUSA registered that could be a problem. Puddin' is due to come into heat again in December and I'm not keen on a litter of unregistered pups. He'll have to be neutered ASAP if we take him.

But she hasn't replied to my email, so maybe she has rehomed him already.

Yah, I can't imagine relocating without taking the furbabies.

I had to leave my Peke behind when I came to SA, but that was because she was 14 and the doc said she probably would not survive the 30 hours in the belly of the plane. But I spent an entire month transitioning her to her new home and made sure she liked her new owner and surroundings. Had she been a younger dog, I would have brought her with.

I'll bet this little boy's owners aren't finding new homes for their kids just because they are moving...

Thats true Sweetviolet. I had a Maltese (Muffy) who I had to put to sleep last year because she was so old and frail (20yrs)!!

I moved to my fiance in Klerksdorp in 2006 and she drove up with us!!! We had a lot os stops to make sure she was well hydrated and fed and could stretch her legs!!! And when we moved back to Cape Town later that year....she drove down with us again. She was 16yrs old then. We flew our other dog (a boxer) down, but he was much younger than her. So I also dont see why people cant take their pets with!!

That is of course if their new situation or living circumstances allows it!!!

Hi Sweetviolet,

I just saw this morning that there was a lady from Cape Town who needed a new home for two yorkie boys, if I understood her post correctly. She posted an add on the forum this morning. her name is Lolie. She posted the thread on Yorkie Rescue & Rehome.

Im not sure if you can assist as you are in JHB??

Sad Sorry, but Cape Town is two days away and I've already done the two day drive with dogs draped all over me!! (When we moved up here I had to sit in the back seat with the dogs because they would not stop moaning and crying unless I did!)

Am not sure if I can take boys at this point, either. My 14 yr old Maltese, Nash, while toothless and arthritic, is still the alpha dog and when we cared for a friend's small male dog while they were on holiday, Nash was very unhappy...they had several disagreements which was easy enough to solve by separating the boys into different gardens, but that's not going to be practical if the new boys are going to live here permanently. And my home is a "forever home" for any dog who comes to live here...once mine, forever mine!

But if I were to find a boy in the JHB area, I would be very tempted to give him a try (a week-long visit or something like that to make sure he could live with Nash).
