PostSubject: Teething effects   Fri Oct 01, 2010 2:08 pm

Im wondering if a puppy experiences any effects when they teeth? I know the Yorkies sometimes have their ears droop but what else?

Trigger is now losing his baby teeth and his adult teeth are popping through quite quickly. I know it's hot in Durban at the moment but do they feel fatigued etc? He sleeps a lot more at the moment than normla. the other day I was worried he was ill but suddenly he jumped up ran around and then collapsed. He is 100% healthy so I wondered if maybe he didnt feel well while he is teething? I know he battles with dry food because his mouth is sensitive and Im very sensitive to his needs at the moment.

Do they feel ill when they teeth? or lethargic? or is he just experiencing puppyhood and crashing as hard as he runs around?!

When they are teething, you will usually be able to pick up on the following signs:

The puppy will chew a lot more - haha, we all know about Trigger's chewing habits, so this could be the cause.

You might see some blood in his mouth, coming from his gums. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

Puppies may experience a lot of pain while they are teething and they may become disinterested in playing. The puppy may also experience diarrhea and a change in appetite.

The puppy might show more signs of aggression and will start biting everyone and everything in sight. If you feel like you don't have enough control over him, it would be a good time to start obedience training.

To help with the discomfort of teething, you can try some of these toys by Petstages: http://www.apetslife.co.za/detail.asp?c=1&s=7&t=96&p=5119&x=0&afl=13

And you can try this natural remedy: http://www.apetslife.co.za/mail_friend.asp?c=1&s=89&t=315&p=6583&x=&afl=13

A dog behaviorist notes that if you find the puppy chewing on the wrong thing, you should only redirect its attention and not reprimand the puppy because it will cause them to chew the wrong things for attention from you. Personally, I use a firm "uh-uh" with my dogs and then I redirect them, but no scolding or harsh tones.

I hope that answers your questions Smile He might also be crashing because he is a puppy - Cash used to be like that all the time. Run, run, run & then plop, and he's asleep. As long as he is eating and drinking water Smile

He seems ok Smile and is very much into playing and tug of war amazingly. Shame, he battles with kibble so I gove him some to ancourage the teeth to come loose and have also made sure he has softer foods to give the poor guy a break!

I noticed one of them had vomited twice yesterday but in all honesty I wasn't looking when it happened so I dont know who it was - Knowing Trigger it was him overindulging on "beginning of the month food"! As strict as I try to be with making sure he doesnt eat anything extra he often sneaks it in somehow!

I am glad to see his teeth falling out much quicker than taylors. he has double canines but Im sure they will come loose soon. the new ones are not fully cut yet so he needs time!

Watch out for the baby canines - it is very, very common for yorkies to retain their baby canines. If there are still any double canine teeth when your yorkie turns one year old then they will need to be removed by your vet. Best time to have extra teeth removed is when your yorkie is under anesthetic being spayed/neuted. Not nice - but very necessary as double canines can cause awful dental diseases No

Great advice Marilize. Running and crashing is very normal for such a young pup but just to be sure I would also just check his temp so you know that it is nothing more than teething. Mine also love to chew on frozen veggies when teething.

Taylor lost her canines at about 9 months old. But when they did come out they had worn dark marks on her adult teeth and one of her smaller teeth on the side was so rotten that it was falling out. I was going to have it removed but I figured it would fall out. Im amazed to say that due to regular brushing the tooth is 100% fine and strong and rooted in and her canines are shiny and sharp!

Trigger's are loose already. He matured a lot faster than she did so Im sure his will fall out even better. Even so it's something I watch very carefully. I brush their teeth daily. Trigger hates it but is getting ok with it (i think he hates the taste of the paste) and Taylor now rolls over and opens her mouth for me to brush!

You are lucky!!!

We battle with Ciara and the tooth brushing. She lets us, but hates it!!! Mika's teeth does not need brushing at the moment, but I am trying to make him used to it by doing his a little as well. He just wants to bite the toothbrush, but seems to enjoy eating the tooth paste!!!
