I have had very unhappy people that have bought Biewer puppies contact me that have turned out to look nothing like a Biewer A'La Pom Pon should and would like to give some advice when looking for a Biewer puppy.
It is very important to see the Dam WITH her puppies and if possible the Sire as well. Ask for previous buyers references and CHECK it. A Biewer A’La Pom Pon puppy should never be separated from its mother and siblings before the age of 10weeks. They mature more slowly than other breeds and only learn from their mother and siblings behavior like “Bite Inhibition” between the ages of 8-10weeks. Where are the puppies registered? Be aware of non reputable registries. Visit the Breeder as often as you can. Research the Breed before buying. Learn how to read a pedigree. Remember that ALL puppies are cute but may grow into a dog you did not have in mind when buying your puppy. Some bloodlines are best avoided as there may be genetic health issues. NEVER place a deposit on a puppy before you have seen it personally and done your research. Get a health certificate from a qualified Veterinarian stating health, vaccinations and deworming history. Ask a lot of questions and a reputable breeder should be happy to answer, if not it should be a big red flag and you should find yourself another breeder.
While DNA testing is very important and all BBC-SA dogs are DNA tested it will at this point in time NOT tell you that the puppy you are buying is according to the Biewer A'La Pom Pon Breed Standard ONLY that its dam and sire are both Biewer A'La Pom Pon's. It can not tell you what size, or where your puppies color placement will be or will it have big floppy ears or if it will be off breeding quality. Only knowing your bloodlines and checking previous litters will give you the peace of mind that what you are buying is what you wanted once the puppy is fully grown. True pure bred Biewer A'La Pom Pon's are rare so be prepared to wait. It will be worth the wait as it can be a very costly mistake if you let your emotions rush you into taking the first available puppy. Some reputable breeders overseas have a waiting list of up to three years.
I always think of my Biewer A'La Pom Pon puppies as diamonds. If you could pick up a diamond on every street corner they would not be as valuable as they are.
MYTH: There are some breeders that think if you cross a Biewer A'La Pom Pon to a regular Yorkie the color with be enhanced, this is absolutely untrue and will result in a washed out color in your Biewer A'La Pom Pon.
As in any other breed there are a lot of unethical breeders out there that may see South Africa as an opportunity to make a quick buck. REMEMBER IT IS ULTIMATELY THE BUYERS RESPONSIBILITY THAT YOU GET WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR AND BREEDERS CANNOT LATER BE BLAMED WHEN YOU AS THE BUYER DID NOT DO YOUR RESEARCH AND KNOW WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT A PUPPY WHETHER IT IS ACCORDING TO THE STANDARD OR HAS FAULTS.
Please contact any member of the Board of Directors of the BBC-SA (www.bbcsa.co.za) if you need any assistance. We stand behind every puppy for life born out of our breeding program and are always available and will gladly assist you whether you are looking to buy locally or import one.
