5 Tips on Training a Yorkshire Terrier
by Top Dog on May 10, 2010

Training Yorkshire Terriers can be frustrating. It can also be a hassle trying to get them to do what you want them to do. So, what I’m going to do is share with you some tips on training a Yorkshire Terrier. That way, you will be able to train your Yorkie the easy way.

The tips on training Yorkshire Terriers are:

1. The first tip on training your Yorkshire Terrier is to know their personality. Yorkies can learn quickly and they will choose to obey or disobey your command. You have to be consistent, firm and persistent with them.

2. Another tip on training a Yorkshire Terrier is to touch their nose and spank them when they’re doing something you don’t want them to do. If your Yorkie is acting bad, touch their nose and spank them softly to let them know they’re not being good.

If you are consistent with this, it will break their bad habits and teach them that when you touch their nose, they’re being bad.

3. Minimizing distractions is another training tip for your Yorkie. When training your dog, make sure their aren’t a lot of people or animals around. Yorkies tend to be energetic and loves attention. So, if there are too many people or animals around, your dog will think it’s play time and won’t listen to your commands.

4. Using treats is another training tip. Whenever your Yorkshire Terrier performs a trick or command, make sure you reward them with a treat.

5. The fifth tip is to train your Yorkie yourself. This is something you should do. It requires you to be consistent and firm. But don’t worry. You will enjoy training your dog. It’s fun.

These are some tips on training a Yorkshire Terrier. If you are serious about training your dog, use these tips. The tips will help you train your dog and help it become the best Yorkie in the world.

Dont know if I agree with all of them, but its useful!! Very Happy

I like this one! I know most people say you shouldn't spank a dog! But I'm sorry, I've raised 6 dogs now plus two that died and now I'm raising my 7th, and putting their nose in their pee and just saying "no!" does not work!!! Well not in my case. Rewards work and a soft spanking works!! Or a touch lie Cesar Millan does. People always think it's cruel, the same with kids. "As jy nie wil hoor nie moet jy voel!" That's how my mom raised me and I was shit scared to try anything because I knew what the consequences were. I didn't get a 10 minute time-out in my room with ALL MY TOYS to play with! No offense if someone doesn't agree with me! lol!

I think that whenever emotions come into training, it is a recipe for disaster. Most people who spank a dog are really angry about something the dog did. In that case, you are venting your frustrations on the dog in a violent way, which is never okay.

But if you can direct punishment in such a way that it is linked to the bad behaviour, it can make a difference. Time-outs are very effective if used correctly. And no, the dog's toys shouldn't be where he is having a time-out. The time-out is effective because dogs are social animals and they hate being away from their family.

I don't believe in spanking, but that doesn't mean that my dogs don't get a soft tap on the bottom when they are being very, very naughty. They do, but I try everything first. Spanking is a last resort. JMO.
