i found this very interesting! After hearing it mentioned n this site that raw food diets will even make dog poo turn white I turned to good old Google for the answers!

1. Why doesn't dog poop turn white anymore?

The most commonly accepted answer to this one is that dog poop turned white because dogs, back in the "old days", ate real bones and the calcium from them would make their waste turn white when it dried. Today's commercial dog food is loaded with filler like rice and corn instead of real meat and bone and organs. Veternarians are generally owned by their petfood suppliers, so don't listen to them when they hawk their dried kibble and claim it is better than a biologically appropriate diet. Instead find a farmer and ask him if he has any trouble with dogs eating up his cornfield...that should tell you how much dogs prefer a corn-based diet.

That came from Wikipedia!!!!

Very interesting. I also understood that it was because dogs don't eat raw bones anymore.

When I was young and our dogs' poo was white, I never really paid attention to it. And when I got Cash and his poo didn't do the same, I didn't even connect the dots. I was feeding him Science Diet because our vet recommended it. At one point, he had bloody diarrhea and I took him to the vet. They never mentioned any connection with his food. That's why I will never trust a vet to know about nutrition.

All Cash's eating problems went away when I started home-cooking, but I didn't really like home-cooking with lots of starches. I was working out of Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats and the dogs were very healthy, but the food was smelly and messy (and it took a lot of effort to make it) and their stools were horrible.

With BARF, we have small white poos! Smile And they don't smell Smile

This morning Trigger had done his poo in the bathroom (as usual) and it was like little white stones! Overnight! I remember my dad always mowing over the droppings on the lawn and it sounding like gunfire! lol!

I had to admit, that even though im still nervous about chicken bones I have started to try them in small doses and see how they go. but in general my dogs LONG for dinner time now instead of looking at me as if to say "What's THAT? we dont eat THAAAATTT!!!"

we had a tortoise when i was younger and she always ate the dog droppings. it was a little gross at times if she had munched through a wet one but we researched it and in the wild they eat Hyena droppings etc because the hyena has eaten bones from a kill and their droppings are full of calcium. our dogs back then ate home cooked food and bones and livers etc so that was why the tortoise ate it. and their poos were ALWAYS white

Mine battle with the big bones! when i bought them i got the butcher to cut them into 4 and they're still so big the poor dogs can hardly carry them around!

do you buy meaty bones? the first time i gave it to them Trigger vomited a short while later. im not sure if he overindulged or if the meat was too rich because they were very meaty

It isn't uncommon for them to vomit and have diarrhea when they are switched to raw. Any change in diet will cause an upset and it is recommend to give them a probiotic when making a switch. The probiotic insures that the dog's stomach can handle the new food.

You can just continue feeding the raw meaty bones. There is no need to worry about the vomiting. It should go away soon if you continue to feed him raw food. If you want to help his system adjust, give him a probiotic like http://www.apetslife.co.za/detail.asp?c=1&s=89&t=128&p=5632&x=0&afl=13
