| Here is a great recipe for home-cooking and raw feeding: Basic Raw Dog Food Recipe For A 20-25# Dog
1/2 cup raw meat (ground poultry, beef, lamb, organ meats) 1/2 cup raw pureed vegetables (variety!) 1/4 cup cooked whole grains (or cooked beans) 1 teaspoon bonemeal powder (double for puppies) 1/4 teaspoon ascorbic acid powder with bioflavinoids (vitamin C) 1/4 teaspoon kelp powder 1/4 teaspoon minced garlic (not powder) 1 teaspoon oil mixture (2 teaspoons with poutlry) Oil mixture:
11 oz. canola oil (cold pressed) 2 oz. wheat germ oil 2 oz. flax oil Keep refridgerated in an opaque container.
Some folks eliminate the grains and increase the meat and vegetables proportionately, and only add the oil if poultry is fed. The meat must be RAW. Dogs should be fed raw bones (cooked bones will splinter). Vegetables must be pureed or they will come out looking pretty much the same way they did going in. Wild canines get their vegetable matter by eating the digested intestinal contents of their vegetarian prey. Variety is essential to deliver the correct mix of vitamins and minerals. If you are feeding raw (and don't include grains or starches), you can simply substitute the whole grains for cooked beans (Vitamin B). Try to add fresh supplements, but if you can't get your hands on everything, you can include a multi-vitamin. But try to get the right oils (very important for their coats). Flax seed oil and wheat-germ oil (Vitamin E) are perfect. I wouldn't really add the canola oil, rather more flax seed oil. Any questions? Let's fill this thread with raw recipes _________________ |

| I found this one which I'm going to give it a try over the weekend Chicken, Liver and Vegetable MedleyIngredientsChicken – 2½ Ounces (+/-70 g) Liver – 1 Ounce (+/-28 g) Sterilized, food grade bone meal – 3/8 Ounce (+/-10 g) Corn oil - ½ teaspoon (Try substituting olive oil if your pet has a corn allergy.) Sliced carrots - ½ cup (+/-60 g) Brussels sprouts - ½ cup (+/- 60g) Garlic – pinch Directions Wash meat and vegetables thoroughly. Peel off carrot skin and cut into small pieces. Cut each Brussels sprout in half. Cut off chicken skin. Cut the chicken into small chunks. Slice the liver into smaller pieces. Mix the meat and vegetables together in a bowl. Stir in the bone meal, oil and garlic. Serve the food. The ingredients in the recipe provide a balanced amount of protein and nutrients. They include sources of protein, carbohydrate, fiber, vitamins A and C, iron, riboflavin, potassium, beta-carotene and fat. I think I'm going to add a multi vitamin with it |

| im going to try some this weekend if possible. I have been feeding more raw foods. last night they had chicken livers and again this morning and i have never seen those bowls get empty so quickly! When they come back and look at you asking for more then you know! i remember asking if it would upset their tummies and someone said no it should make their stools firm and the poos will turn white...that's exactly what has happened. i have looked at all available dry foods and they are all made up of mostly starches and veg. i was disappointed i still add some kibble in with their food but a tiny bit only and they are just loving it! |

| Here is another easy recipe: BARF Dinner
Ingredients: 1/2kg Raw Meat 1 raw egg 2 tablespoons yogurt 1 teaspoon honey 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1/2 teaspoon flax seed oil 1 teaspoon kelp seaweed powder 1 teaspoon alfalfa powder 250 mgs vitamin C -- for dogs 1/4 cup kibble -- optional
Twice a week, feed liver or organs. The meat is apparently better if it is cut into cubes, but my yorkies have trouble eating chunks of meat. Chunks clean the teeth and gums, but could also cause choking.
This recipe doesn't have any veggies. If you want to use it on a regular basis, you can include some pureed or steamed vegetables. You can use baby food, but make sure that it doesn't contain onion or onion powder.
If you have a multivitamin, you can use this instead of the kelp, alfalfa and vitamin C.

By Multivitamin, do you mean something like Bobtail tablets? |

| Yes, tablets, powders or multivit liquids. The bobtail ones are fine. Not the best, but fine. _________________ |

| I would suggest if it's your dogs first time to eat home-cooked/raw food, give it in the morning!!!! I gave it last night and my house is in a state!!!! I had to wash all our blankets this morning. The carpets will need to be cleaned as well!! You can imagine what 6 yorkies can do with upset stomachs!!!! |

| Wow, Jeanique! I am so sorry to hear about the upset tummies! I never had a problem with mine on BARF, but on home-cooking, they were terrible. I hope you keep trying and I really hope their tummies adjust quickly! _________________ |

| I'll definitely keep trying! I made a bunch and froze it so... It's like with any diet, if you eat something you're not used to, your tummy gets upset! I just should've given it in the morning instead of the evening! LOL! But it's all good! Last night they were fine! Thanks for the concern!

| Jeanique, when it comes to supplementing the home-cooked diet, I prefer to use a powder supplement from Vondis. It contains all the good stuff: kelp, brewer's yeast, bone meal, alfalfa, a little garlic, etc. And it is very cheap, only R50 for about 350ml. It's called a Health Supplement, or something similar.
If you can't find this, you can try to find other multivitamins at your local shops. When I see a new product, I always read the label to see if it is something we could use. If you just take a look at the ingredients list or nutritional values, you will get a good idea of the quality of the supplement. Look for things like kelp, alfalfa, omega 3&6, brewer's yeast, Vitamin A, B, C, E, etc. It helps to get to know the levels of Vitamins that are appropriate for dogs.
Finally, I have the recipe for a healthy supplement like the one I buy at Vondis. I don't make it myself because it is cheaper from Vondis, but if you want the recipe, let me know. Then you can just source the ingredients and make your own supplement. The recipe I have is from Dr.Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats.

| Yes please post it for me!! I need to see if I can find a Vondis here in JHB! But please, I'd like to see the recipe! With so many dogs it might be better to make a whole lot! |

| Dr. Pitcairn's Healthy Powder Recipe:2 cups nutritional or brewer's yeast; 1 cup lecithin granules; 1/4 cup kelp powder; 4 tablespoons bone meal or 2 teaspoons egg shell powder; 1000 milligrams Vitamin C (ground) or 1/4 teaspoon sodium ascorbate. Mix all ingredients together in a 1000ml container and refrigerate. Sprinkle 1 - 2 teaspoons over meals depending on the size of your yorkie. A small dog should get 1 - 2 teaspoons per day. Variations: Yeast: This is optional, but it encourages them to eat because they like the taste. It's like parmesan on your pasta and it's healthy. If you want to leave it out, decrease the calcium to 1 3/4 teaspoons eggshell powder. To replace the lost nutrients, add a complete multivitamin-mineral supplement. Kelp: If you can't use kelp, you can substitute 1/4 cup of alfalfa powder. I hope this helps _________________ |
