Thanks for showing me to this site. Clicked today and will do so everyday. We often buy extra dog food and place it in the trolleys and bins at selected stores. Pick n Pay had it recently!!!!

In a perfect world I would give them all a home - I have always been one to save every animal i see in need. perhaps when I am more financially stable I will make my dream a reality!

Before I got Cash, I used to volunteer at the Stellenbosch Animal Welfare. But after I got him, I couldn't justify spending that time with those doggies instead of with him. Then I started to foster puppies for various welfare organizations. The puppies were always too young to survive in a kennel environment and they were always sick, full of worms and covered with mange. They made Cash sick sometimes, but at least he had some friends to play with.

Then I got June and I haven't fostered since. I don't feel it's fair to bring all those illnesses in to your own dogs. And now I don't have a way to help out anymore! Except to give money and clicks! And I try to do it as often as I can afford.

I just feel so bad that these dogs don't have a place to go. It makes me even madder when I talk to people who refuse to sterilize their dogs! I feel like there should be a bumper sticker saying: "They're not your balls!" You know?

lol! That's so funny!!!!

It's nice that you helped out where you could! Don't feel bad about it now, I'm sure they understand that it is risky to bring those puppies into your home if they are sick!

ever since i could walk i have been rescuing everything that moved!

the last dog i tried to help was a German Shepherd that ran (hobbled) in front of my car right near a busy highway. so i stopped, only to be laughed at by some of our local people who thought i was insane. I thought it was their dog but it carried on moving and was too scared to come to me.

"thin" does not describe it's condition...it was emaciated. it walked down a dirt road and I couldnt turn a blind eye so i followed it and threw one of my nice hot bread rolld out the window as I drove past which it swallowed whole. after that i stopped and it came to me and had a leather collar around it's neck with no tag so there i sat in the middle of nowhere not knowing what to do. there is a dump site nearby and a man drove past and stopped and said he had seen me and was worried about my safety and the dog of course because he had 2 German Shepherds at home and this broke his heart.

so i phoned SPCA and they said i could bring it to them if I could get it in my car which i was afraid of in case it bit me. so i had a bread roll in my hand and broke a piece off and as i threw it on the floor the dog snatched the other peice from my hand in starvation and bit me accidently. i hardly noticed but this poor man nearly passed out! the dog wasnt vicious so i wasnt worried. we loaded him in the car and i took him to the SPCA who gave me 100 million questions and accused me of trying to dump my dog.

point of the story is that i ended up having to have rabies treatment that cost me over R3000. the dog was put to sleep (typical South Africa SPCA im sorry to say) and tested negative for rabies but i had to have treatment asap. i was given a strict lecture from everyone to turn a blind eye in future but I still stop for strays to help if possible. I would have taken the dog home but like you say, who knows what diseases you take home to your pets. i have done it all my life and most my pets have been strays or rescues until now. i dont know what it is about a rescue but it's almost as if they know you saved them and love you that much more.

i still believe that if you can save one animal then you have made a difference in this sad world

Kristin, I'm so glad there are people like you in the world!
Sometimes I drive with my boyfriend to drop the workers off in the location, but since the last time I went with I promised myself I would never go again. I saw so many abused and starved dogs and if he hadn't carried on driving I probably would've picked them all up and given them a second chance at life. Just thinking about it makes me all teary Sad

I used to do the same in Underberg as a child - the animal neglect and abuse I have seen there on dogs, cats, horses and even chickens killed me Sad I even bought a puppy from our labourers on our farm once and paid them all my savings (back in those days i got R5 pocket money a month!). a few years ago they had another dog that my parents put their foot down on me taking home and one saturday I got in my car and drove 300km back to the farm to fetch her but she had passed away from Billary and I was devastated...my boyfriend at the time really thought i was slightly mad!

You really have a golden heart I love you !!!!

I also feel like that at times. I cant stand to watch animals that are abused. I also wish that I could just take them in and care for them, but that is impossible. That is why we donate pet food whenever we can or other items!!

I also donate clothes and books etc to the SPCA shops instead of selling them or giving them away.
