PostSubject: Which brushes are best?   Fri May 14, 2010 7:31 am

I was wondering what brushes are best to use on the Yorkie's coat to avoid damage and breakage?

I find Taylor's coat gets very knotty, especially if she wears a jersey and i try to comb them out but she doesnt like it and I dont want to cut them out. I try and brush her daily to avoid this.

Whcih brushes do you use?

I was also wondering the same thing.
I know you shouldn't brush their hair when it's dry either You should always spray water or something on there. I mixed a small amount of conditioner with water and spray him before I brush him. I try brush him at least twice a day and I use a normal dog brush. At first he ran away from the spray bottle but now he loves being sprayed!
I'm also looking to get him a better brush so suggestions are welcome!! Razz

Hi There,

I use the pin brush for Ciara. I had the same problem when she was a pup and believe it or not when I took her to tha parlour her has was so knotted, they shaved her!!!! I was not too impressed, but her hair grew back nicely and I now know how to handle her. I use a detangling shampoo for her and brush her often, Especially when she wears her jearsey I try to brush every evening. Dont worry, the pins will not hurt the dog. I do it lightly and the knots come out qute easily. I bought it at a wet shop.

Hope it helps!!!!

What is a slicker brush? are they recommended?

I have a fine comb to get the knots out and if she sits still it doesnt hurt because i can work them out. I also have a simple 2 sided brush. but she has never been good at sitting still! she prefers to chew the brushes and combs!

Im sure people who show their dogs use more specialised brushes though. I like Peperpaws spray bottle with conditioner in it Smile i normally rub a TINY bit of leave in condit ioner in if her coat is matted but it makes her oily.

I ask mainly because now with the new puppy I would like to keep his haor long. I cut Taylor's at 4 months old and i regret doing it even though it was cooler for her. I would like him to keep his pupy hair for a while Smile but maintaining it is HARD work!

I'm very tempted to cut Pepper's hair, it's a bush :afro: ! But luckily it's thinning out now. Janine told me there brushes at Dischem so I'm going to have a look today if I can get one. Pepper also eats his brush! He also doesn't sit still long enough to get the knots out either. I have to keep him distracted with a toy or something. And so far it is HARD work lol! Exclamation

i normally brush Taylor in the bedroom because she gets a blow dry and then I finish brushing her there. I have found her to be more co-operative if i stand her on the kitchen counter. that way i have a few treats hidden away in the cupboard above and she gets rewarded for sitting still. it's easier for me to handle her up higer.

I just find she licks her hair into knots!!! weird i know but as soon as she starts to lick, the hair immediately knots up Sad even brushing her every day doesnt stop the knots. and i just finish bathing and grooming her and i will feel another one!

She doesn't mind the soft bristles, but the metal ones freak her out. I am working on it slowly. She never liked the clippers and actually bit me the first time i tried (who knows what she went through at the parlour Sad ) but now she is so much better and tolerates it.

Hi Kristin,

So how are things with Trigger?? Did the name stick already? How are they getting along now? What did you do with the eating situation? Do they keep to their bowls or do they eat from each others bowls?

Hi Smile

Much to my horror the name DOES seem to be sticking! I still think it's a great horses name!

They have calmed down a lot...or should i say Taylor has calmed down a lot! Trigger was never upset! He just bites her legs a lot which I can't blame her for disliking...those teeth are like needles!

He is sleeping in the kitchen so I feed him in the same spot so he knows where his food is. Taylor eats on the outside porch and I just shut the door while she eats so he doesnt harrass her because she isnt a greedy eater and likes to take her time. But he is a greedy little thing and eats his food and then goes to eat hers! luckily they are both on the same food! one day they can eat together Smile

But you know, typical dog...she eats his food as soon as he so much as lifts his head out the bowl and he wants to eat hers! I just have to limit his quantity though so I make sure he is not eating too much! Im amazed to see how he chews through dry kibble! he hates it soaked so I have mixed in a tiny bit a white chicken meat and he loves it. He eats anything he finds. Poor Taylor sits patiently and waits for a tidbit at dinner time and he bites her because she is not allowed up on the sofa while we eat and she won't jump up. As soon as i give her something he bites her and she drops it and runs and it's gone down his gut!

They are really bringing me SO much pleasure Smile Even my boyfriend who was very anti me getting him just adores him Smile in fact i think Trigger might turn out to be more his dog...they just love each other! suddenly the dogs are even allowed in the bed and wee's on the carpet are fine because Trigger did it!

Taylor just waits for him to crash after his insane running around and then she snuggles with him...i think she tries to lie on him in the hope he suffocates! lol! i was expecting her to be out of sorts when he arrived and i think they are settling down very well Smile

I couldnt ask for more Smile and he is settling down at night too which is great!

Thats great to hear. As I mentioned a while ago, I am also looking for a male pup as companion for Ciara. I was scared that she would not like it, but I am sure she will also get used to it. We have a Boxer (male) in the yard that she get along with. She is the one irritating him at the moment, luckily he is very patient with her and when he has enough of her he just walks away.

I actually booked a puppy by someone. Her dog went into labour yesterday, but it is not going too well. They had to perform a caesarian. She let me know this morning that two puppies are still alive and she would let me know if they make it. I am not sure how much she was expecting though. Thats sad.....!!!! I was really looking forward to having another one.

Thats is another reason why I do not want to breed with Ciara. I will not be able to handle it is something happens to her or the pups!!!!

I am anxiously awaiting an e-mail from her, but I am also too scared to read her e-mail in case its bad news!!!! Will hope for the best and keep you posted!!!

Taylor is always the one who irritated the other dogs too and I think she was just confused now that Trigger is the one doing it to her. It will take a while...i mean he is stealing her toys and food and weeing in her bed and biting her and i can't blame her for being upset!

But then there are other times when she totally changes and we just ignore them and don't interfere and they play endlessly until one collapses from exhaustion (normally Trigger) and they are great buddies Smile

Waiting for my puppy killed me too but I got one super healthy and happy puppy. I battled with Taylor as a baby and i nearly lost her the first night i had her. I spent endless nights without sleeping just holding her and keeping her warm and making sure she was breathing. and it terrified me getting Trigger because I had almost convinced myself that it was normal for them to be weak, but it isn't. for a dog so small they are real fighters.

I would recommend you shop around for the perfect puppy and spend a little more if you need to. Look on gumtree, there are always Yorkies. Get the breeders name and run it past people like Amoureux and Marilize and see what they think. Or even if they can recommend a breeder that is in your price range.

A C-Section is common but im sure it puts a lot of stress on mommy and babies. And in my opinion a puppy that has had that really rough start might be more susceptible to problems later on. Im no expert though - and maybe the puppies will bounce back and be fine Smile just monitor it closely and always look for the healthiest and livliest puppy you can find Smile

I saw Trigger at 3 weeks and again at 5 before i made a decision

Open a new thread regarding the issue and see what the others say - maybe I'm way off course!

Thanks!! I will ask for other comments as well. I still did not hear anything yet. I will have to go and look at the puppies if they survive!

I had another look on gumtree, but I will first wait to hear what happens to these pups. Then I will start looking again.

The best advice I can give you is to go and see the puppies as often as you can and the mother and father (even if the stud does not belong to the same breeder) and if at all possible siblings of the the same mating from previous litters and ask for references from previous buyers and contact them. If the breeder finds this offensive that is a big red flag. Look for another breeder.

Thanks Amoureux! I will take that advice. I must still contact the lady again to find out how the pups are and if they made it. I will definitely go have a look before I buy the pup. The pictures of her previous litter looks healthy. I am not sure what when wrong this time!

Without question the gentlest, best grooming brush around. Pins don't collapse like other brushes. Many colours to help you select the perfect type for your breed of Dog or Cat. Do the Pin test!!
Standard Pin Brush
Head measures 2.5" across 4.5" height & has 11 rows of 22mm pins. Total Length of the brush is 9".
BLUE & GREEN are very soft. They have the softest cushion, best for sensitive skin & for the Ring.
BABY BLUE, ORANGE, & PINK are soft, great for both silky & cottony coats, ideal for everyday use.
RED & PURPLE are medium soft for thicker hair & recommended for everyday grooming.
BLACK is standard soft for thicker hair & mixed breeds.
Pocket Pin Brush
Head measures 2" across & 4" height & has 9 rows of 22mm pins. Total Length of the brush is 8".
PINK Soft cushion. ..Ideal for every day use
BLACK Standard soft for thicker hair and mixed breeds.
PINK OBLONG Standard soft for thicker hair
Combs
Moustache 4.5"
Ringside 6"
Grooming Comb 7.5” lightweight Aluminum non slip handle 37 fine/26 course 24mm pins BLUE & PURPLE & slightly longer pin in GREEN
Silicon Tail Comb in BLUE, GREEN, RED, & PINK
This comb is excellent for the face area & it simply brushes off the eye gunk. The steel tail can be used for the topknot or to divide the hair before putting it up on a topknot.
Madan Band Scissors in BLUE, GREEN, RED, & PINK
Scissors with a curved end, slide gently underneath the band, will not break the hair.
Grooming Bands Highest Quality Elastic
Latex plain 5/16”
Latex Grooming Bands are made from resin coated latex to securely grip hair without breaking or damaging it.
Latex Free. Clear or neon coloured 5/16” (highly recommended)
Grooming Bands are made from medical grade resin and are clear in appearance. These are a great alternative to latex bands without the risk of allergic reactions. ...and they stretch well making it much easier to do the top knot
Hope this helps
