PostSubject: Medipet Medical Aid   Fri May 07, 2010 3:00 pm

I have just joined Medipet Medical Aid for Taylor.

My vet suggested it because he says that with the Yorkie breed it's better to be safe than sorry in case something (God forbid) should ever hapen to her.

I have heard good things about them - Are any of you members? And if so what kind of review would you give them.

I am paying R145 a month and receive the following benefits:

1.Vets fees (per annum) R25, 000
2.Vets fee excess (per claim) R250
3.Death from illness/accident R1000
4.Advertising/reward R250
5.Third party liability R1,000,000
6.Boarding kennel fees p.a. R1000
7.Theft (with police case no.) R1000
8.Burglar reward R500
Accidental injuries

Any illnesses
Operations
Dog fight lacerations
Gastric torsion
Tumour removals
Snake Bites
Hip replacements
Use any vet countrywide
Cover can be taken from 8 weeks up to 9 years
R50 per day for kennels, catteries or pet sitters (not living with you), if you are suddenly ill or unable to look after your pet
Advertising & reward cover – R250 p.a. for cats and R1 000 p.a. for dogs
R100 p.m. for prescription diet needed to treat an illness for up to 6 months, on recommendation from your vet
No specified limits – just R25 000 overall general cover
NO routine care cover
Lifetime cover

The only things they do not cover are

regular pregnancy and delivery
grooming; behaviour problems
elective procedures
hereditary or congenital defects
pre-existing conditions before insurance was taken
foods & diets of your choice (unless specifically advised by your vet to assist in clearing up a medical condition).

Any thoughts??

Well luckily I haven't had to claim yet but from what others have told me they're very good.

I wish MY medical aid was so cheap!!!

Hi Kristin,

After I saw your post I read up about medipet and also joined. Vets can get quite pricey. I am waiting for my papers now. Do you know anyone that has clamied? What did they claim for?

I met a girl the other day who has 2 Pugs and she says her male has been sickly and has cost her over R20 000 in vets bills and she joined and they have paid it all for her. I think it's a claim back policy so you pay the vet and then claim it back from Medipet.

I have justn received my policy which i must read through properly. Taylor is due for a vet's visit soon and I will post about my experience as soon as I can!

And at least it's subject to a months notice so if you are really unhappy with it you can cancel in a month. but like I said, the vet did recommend it for me.

Ok. I will wait for your post. I also understood it that way when I read the internet info. I dont remember seeing anything about pets teeth. Do you know if they will cover that?

How is Taylor doing? Shame I read your other post about her bladder. I almost think that some yorkies have bladder problems. I was worried about Ciara when she was a pup because whenever you looked there would be a puddle. I took her to the vet and they told me to onitor her for two weeks. Luckily she outgrew it and have good bladder control. As for where she does it....thats a different story!!!!! I hope Taylors problem can be resolved.

That's what the vet told me...to monitor her for 2 weeks. R260 later and he never even tested her urine for an infection! Im hoping she outgrows it to because it's weird. she isnt in pain and he said her bladder felt fine and then suggested this "Ectopic Ureter" and freaked me out!I will take her back for full tests soon.

I dont think they cover teeth - I remember seeing that somewhere. my boyfriend thinks im a total nut-job but im a big believer in brushing teeth daily if possible!

It happens VERY quick. taylor has a mark on her back tooth and im just trying to brush it daily and see if i can remove it eventually.

She hated her teeth being brushed at first but quite likes it now Smile

Did you buy the toothbrush that fits on your finger? Or are you using a normal one?

Diji loves having his teeth brushed for one reason... To eat his toothpaste!! The vet said that it tastes like chicken. Once the paste is gone he chews my finger while I try to brush. hehe. I hope he grows out of it. I have the microfibre brush that fits on your finger.

From what age did you all start brushing their teeth? I've bought the toothpaste and let Pepper smell it - he just wants to eat it! But I doubt he will allow me to put my finger in his mouth to brush his teeth. He's not a fan of sitting still at all! He's only 4 1/2 months now and all his baby teeth are visible.

I started her at 6 months when she had all her teeth. We only got her when she was 3months old.

Jacky, if you have the stuff start using it. I started with Taylor later than I should have but after a few brushes she was ok with it. sometimes she hates it...I fins her gums are delicate where she hasn't lost her baby teeth so i try to be gentle.

She hated the taste! I plan to start the baby on it as soon as possible just to get him used to it. His teeth are coming through good and fast though!

The lady in the shop said use the gel on puppies bc it actually sticks to their teeth so even if you don't manage to brush them well at least the gel is stuck on their teeth and doing some good.

and i dont put the finger brush over my finger. i lie Taylor on her side and life her gums a few times and reward her good behaviour before i start. the vet said always brush in a circular, upward direction.

Which paste have you got? I use PetDent by Kyron labs. Diji loves it.

I think mine is also PetDent - it's in a blue-ish Green tube. It's the gel not the paste.
